As far as comebacks come, they don't get much more anticipated than this. In 2004, The Killers released their huge selling debut album Hot Fuss which besides selling 3 million copies, also scored the band sold out World tours and countless TV airplay.
When You Were Young is the first sample of the four-piece's much awaited second album Sam's Town and as the band have recently stated, their new material is influenced by the likes of classic rock songwriters like Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty.
This 80's American rock influence is pretty transparent straight away, from the soft rock MOR nature of the track. Scarily, this new single is pretty bland and the swirling synths with grand guitars almost comes across like a pastiche of their sound. The chorus is still as catchy as anything as they've done before but the guitars are worringly stadium rock orientated.
First singles are usually the strongest song on an album. If this is the case, then Sam's Town looks unlikely to follow in the footsteps of Hot Fuss.
