It seems the time away since being nominated for a Mercury Music Prize in 2006 for their debut album Voices of Animals & Men and a year of non-stop touring, has not been wasted for The Young Knives who have nearly finished work on their second long-player.
The first fruits of their sophomore album (which is produced by Tony Doogan - Super Furry Animals, Mogwai) is this single Terra Firma. The song is incredibly basic but works on so many levels and thankfully, the Mercury nomination hasn't dampened the band's sound or gone to their heads.
There's the whole jerky guitar sound and driven beats that we've all heard a hundred times now, but it's the demanding mantra-like chorus of "fake rabbit, real snake, Terra Firma, Firma" that will have you hooked in no time.
It's the most simplistic of tracks and doesn't offer anything new as such, yet it is impossible not to fall in love with the song and I can only imagine how good this will sound live. Welcome back Young Knives!
