It's finally time for UK fans to be treated to 'Hook Me Up' - two years after Aussie twin rockers The Veronicas first released it in their home country. Luckily for British listeners and US owners of the re-released version - we are compensated for the long wait by three extra tracks.
One thing this feisty duo certainly aren't lacking is obvious vocal passion, although two songs in which it seems to fizzle (slightly) - 'This Love' and 'I Can't Stay Away' - are funnily enough the only tracks on the album not to be penned by the sisters. Perhaps this says something about their ability to write and perform their own songs without the use of a third party...
It was quite a surprise to find so many 'ballads' on the album - although I use the term very loosely. As well as the aforementioned tracks, ' I Don't Wanna Wait', and 'Revenge Is Sweeter (Than You Ever Were)' consist of a sweet melody, paired with dancey electro-pop backing music.
'I Don't Wanna Wait' is like listening to a ballad and a dance track fighting it out to see who wins - you never know when the beat is gonna kick in and the tempo will suddenly drop again. Both are great songs, and being difficult to pigeon hole takes nothing away from the genius behind their sound.
On a more slushy note, there are a couple of softer tracks - 'Someone Wake Me Up' and 'In Another Life' - the latter being one of the best songs on the album. Most of this sweet number is sung with the backing of a barely audible orchestra - the loudest instrument being the vocals themselves. But then in come the electric guitars, and you remember that this is The Veronicas you're listening to.
Stand out songs on 'Hook Me up' are fairly predictable - singles Untouched and 4Ever win hands down. But there are no bad tracks on this album - despite two of the bonus songs having no major impact on the final outcome - and 'Popular' being a slightly cheesy attempt at rapping, obviously aimed at younger fans.
This album might be a shocker for those expecting a record full of rocky tracks, as the majority play on the electro part of their act. However, there is no bad to be said about these Aussie babes - and even better, the fact that this was originally released in 2007 labels Katy Perry's 'I Kissed A Girl' a copycat track - as the girls exclaim on 'Take Me On The Floor' - "I wanna kiss a girl!"
