Not even 'No Can Do' (the second single from 'Catfights & Spotlights') can fix the disappointment of the Sugababes' lackluster sixth album, a record that was only just saved (and barely) by the Boots-advert sampling lead song Girls. The new single is typical of the sound the 2008 charts have been rammed and crammed with - an assortment of horns and brass, a jazzy-funky feel and as with its predecessor, the song relies once again on a hooky sample (Sweet Charles Sherrell's 'Yes It's You').
In recent interviews, the girls stated their preference at singing over "real instruments" instead of the processed sounds, synths and computer-programmed beats of their former albums - but it's this electronic-built music that has previously made the feisty pop trio that bit more interesting than their competition. Sadly, this current direction they seem happy to pursue, has nothing original to call their own and the prospect of a Sugababes trademark sound is a distant memory.
