10 studio albums behind them, more than 50 million albums sold worldwide, over 1000 live shows to 10 million plus fans - we are of course, talking about Simply Red. Celebrating their 25th anniversary, this two-disc package compiles 25 of the band's most loved and biggest tracks, that were a permanent fixture in the charts over the last 3 decades.
If one thing can be established from this solid collection, the group were never shy of trying different styles. Pulling off everything from soul to blues and pop (often within the same track), Mick Hucknall and band could never be accused of being uninventive when it comes to genre-morphing.
Of their diverse pallette, this welcome retrospective toys with the tugging at the heart-strings ballad 'Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye', the funk-driven 'Sunrise', dance inspired 'Ain't That A Lot Of Love', colourful reggae on 'Night Nurse', hip-hop beats on 'Angel' and the multi-layered carnival percussion and house pianos of huge hit 'Fairground'. Hardly the works of a one-dimensional band, which explains the group's swelling fanbase that covers the UK, US and Europe.
Few bands have recorded enough hits to fill a single CD, let alone two discs. And while the phrase "timeless classics" sounds like a cliche, these tracks genuinelly have passed the test of time and will continue to sound as poignant in another 25 years to come.
