Three years on from their acclaimed eponymous second-album, and Dublin-based, Mexican-born guitar two-piece Rodrigo y Gabriela return with another strong collection of vocal-less instrumentals on '11:11'.
Composed entirely (well almost) by duelling acoustic guitars, very few songs absorb any other form of instrumentation. Hand claps occasionally fill empty space, or the guitar frame is bashed and rapped to add rolling percussive accompaniments, but these are far and wide, leaving an emphasis clearly on rapid plucks and detailed fret mastery.
Electric guitar peeps its head briefly on songs such as 'Logos' and 'Santo Domingo'; the latter of those steps out of their traditional Mexican folk meets jazz, flamenco and tropicalia hybrid found throughout '11:11', and takes a slight Turkish psych turn, flirting with Middle Eastern rhythms and percussion.
Again on their new full-length piece, the pair conjure up a thoroughly exhilarating and detailed ride. Often, Rodrigo y Gabriela recreate the rich tapestry and depths of a full band at work, despite such a stripped, minimalist approach to their craft.
