Not even the standout list of collaborators and producers that contributed to 'Rebelution' (Akon, Ke$ha, Lil Jon, Swizz Beatz) can save the album from falling flat on its face before Pitbull has even left the starting blocks. As we heard on the recent single 'I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)', the Miami rapper has taken on a new electro-pop assault for his fourth record - an angle continued for the entire duration of the disc.
If bleepy, watered-down electro and kitschy club-hop - with as much lyrical genius as an angry, angsty teen is your thing - then by all means, 'Rebelution' is a great record. For the rest of us, though, there are few points of interest scattered about to even warrant a second, let alone a third listen of the album. The lyrics especially are an eye-opener, it's hard to take a full-grown man seriously when he's offering such insightful wordplay as "It's my life and I do what I do, and if you don't like it, it's cool f*** you".
Shaped by camp Europop synths and disco beats, 'Rebelution' shares more in common with the disposable hip-hop of Flo Rida. There is no doubting that he is a charismatic and fun artist, capable of delivering catchy pop singles (see 'Hotel Room Service' and 'I Know You Want Me') - but that's exactly where the problem lies with Pitbull - he's a pop star and not a credible rapper.
