'Closer' was a such a great summer song, that to follow it with 'Miss Independant' seems a strange choice for Ne-Yo.
Where his last song was filled with flare, this track falls flat. It lacks the same funky beats and catchy melody, instead managing to sound like an average soppy, wet R&B single that you could take or leave.
It's not like you can even blame the production for the shift in music, as Stargate, who produced 'Miss Independant', also worked with Ne-Yo on 'Closer'. It's difficult to pinpoint the reason that this song disappoints, it's just unfortunate that it does.
