Compared to her previous three full-length efforts, 'Come To Life' shows a darker, edgier and more reflective angle we've never seen from former Aussie soap star Natalie Imbruglia.
This darker atmosphere is set early by the Northern Soul-esque opener 'My God', followed by the intimate (but ill-titled) ballad 'Fun', complete with emotive orchestral touches. Elsewhere, Nat takes the personal jangly indie route on 'Scars' and the Demi Lovato-esque 'Lukas'.
After a broody first half, Imbruglia flips into electro-vixen mode, led by the driven bass of 'Want' and followed by the weird synth riffs of 'WYUT' and Lady Gaga-coated 'Cameo'. Although electro-pop and Natalie's name are hardly two obvious links, they do make for a good partnership and show a desire to experiment with her sound.
Imbruglia took four years away to record 'Come To Life' and the time away wasn't spent unwisely either, she's crafted 10 of her strongest songs to date, helped by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin who co-wrote three of the tracks featured.
