Mika - We Are Golden

And the award for most disappointing comeback of 2009 goes to... Mika. Whether you love him or hate him, no can deny the quirky singer's first album was crammed with the kind of infectious pop gems that are more difficult to shift than an STD.

However, listening to 'We Are Golden' (the title track from the forthcoming album of the same name), it's as though Mika has been spending too much time listening to the faux positivity of the Polyphonic Spree. It's theatrical like a musical and far-too nauseating for its own good - overblown and comical are two words that spring to mind.

There's a shouty, angsty children's choir, nonsensical lyrics about being a teenager (...Mika is 26), warbling allover-the-place vocals and an obligatory falsetto that feels almost forced, if not thrown in as a token gesture to reclaim those glorious heights of 2007's 'Life In Cartoon Motion'.
