It's good to see McFly moving away from their annoying cheesy pop image. Lets face it, they're hardly rock and roll, but since leaving their old label and starting their own, they've certainly progressed and now appear to be making music they enjoy doing.
After basically being a boyband with instruments, it looks as though McFly have matured, aiming to be respected for their music and considered more as a "real band".
'Lies' follows One For The Radio, and while the latter still had remnants of their previous poptastic background in it's melody, 'Lies' shows a different style to the band's music, while still keeping it within easy reach of their existing fans.
Pianos, brass, strings and guitars all cross paths with heavy drum beats, giving this single an almost theatrical sound. This is mirrored in the Rocky Horror style music video, (think 'Thriller' meets 'Backstreets Back' goes to Broadway).
McFly are at a crossroads between boyband and real band, and 'Lies' is a product of this metamorphosis. It's a lively and entertaining track and definitely different from anything I've heard McFly do before. Good on them for trying something different!
