Despite all the tongue-in-cheek rants to come from the outspoken Lily Allen, when the singer described her second album as having an "electronic" influence she wasn't bluffing.
'The Fear' is the lead single from 'It's Not Me, It's You' and is a surprisingly different listen than fans will be used to. Hopping on board the electropop bandwagon, the distinctive twee singalong nature of hits like 'Smile' and 'LDN' sound like they came from a different artist when compared to this synthy, drum-machine backed foot-tapper.
Never one to shy away from speaking her mind, Allen's lyrics hit out at how superficial the media are - poking fun at what constitutes being a celebrity in this day and age - from glamour models, to footballer's wives - they are all get mentioned in lines like: "I’ll take my clothes off and it will be shameless, cuz everyone knows that’s how you get famous" and "I want to be rich and I want lots of money, I don’t care about clever I don’t care about funny."
Lily is offering fans something different with 'The Fear' which should earn her some extra brownie points from the music press, but whether or not the song will make as large an impact as 2006's 'Alright, Still', only time will time.
