Two sold-out singles and working with producer Erol Alkan, big things are tipped for this Castle Donington lot, Late Of The Pier. Last release, Bathroom Gurgle, was met with more than good praise in 2007 but third effort is a lot more interesting to these ears.
The art-rock / post-punk of the first two singles are left behind at the door and the band venture into realms of the downright weird and wonderful. The four-piece offer some seriously wobbly synths and off-key electronics, tribal drums, a few moments of 80s hip-hop courtesy of a drum machine and a funky Prince-esque falsetto that occurs from time to time.
The melodies wander aimlessly and there appears to be no set structure, plus on a more inventive tip we hear fooling around with randomly-recorded samples of house parties and sounds like smashed glass & spoons landing in coffee mugs.
That may well sound awful when written down, but with humour, experimentation and being just a great tune in general, what more could you want?
