Lady Sovereign's first album Public Warning is out on Halloween and not only is it destined to make her a household name before the year is out, it also looks set to raise awareness of the UK hip hop scene in the States.
In the meantime, a couple of remix 7" singles have surfaced this week with Adrock delivering the Smallstars Remix and this tasty slab of wax comes from Philadelphia collective Spank Rock.
Spank Rock have been getting some dizzying reviews and coverage lately and when you hear their spell-binding mix-up of rap, hip hop and electro pop it all becomes clear why. First up is a Ch-Ching, the first tune that made us all go crazy for Lady Sovereign and this remix really takes the track somewhere else. Vocals are speeded up like some demented chipmunk high on helium, the beats are proto drum 'n' bass and Spank Rock have drilled in grinding noises so dirty and distorted that even Wolf Eyes would stand back in amazement.
Hoodie on the flip loses the cartoon dance friendliness of the Basement Jaxx produced single from this year and slaps down some early 80's old school electro beats, cowbells and the vocals of a guest rapper. This remix doesn't differ all too greatly from the original but does take away the squeeky clean, over polished production of the track.
