Considering 'Exposed' is the debut album by Kristina DeBarge, the singer is joined by a stellar team of songwriters to make even the most established of stars green with envy. Lending their gifted skills to the 11-song record, are Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic and Babyface, to name but two.
If you've heard lead single 'Goodbye', you'll already know how strong a vocalist the 19-year-old California-native is. But the rest of the songs found on 'Exposed' don't follow the same formula of that catchy, instant guilty pleasure. In fact more than of the album is slow-paced - mainly ballads.
Songs like 'It's Gotta Be Love' or 'Doesn't Everybody Want To Fall In Love' recall early 2000s R&B. The Timbaland-style beats of 'Future Love' is also another point of mention, as are the contemporary 'Speak Up' and 'Powerless', which wouldn't go amiss on Keri Hilson's recent In A Perfect World.
But on the heavy club beats of 'Sabotage' or the electropop of 'Somebody', DeBarge shows she can just as easily vocal hop between a dancier backing, as the more quieter pieces heard elsewhere.
One minor fault however, is the album features too many similar-sounding songs and offers little diversity. Kristinia DeBarge has showed a lot of promise on her debut album, which is as strong, if not stronger than some of her competitors selling millions of records. This is a name you'll be hearing for years to come.
