The new king of laptop-pop Esser, has bizarrely remained somewhat of an underground gem during 2008, even after a succession of singles that each outdid the last. Hopefully, that will all change in the coming months as this eccentric, multi-talented bedroom producer drops his debut album in May.
A jack-of-all-trades, it's near impossible to guess where Esser will go on his next release - electro-indie, ska-tronics, hip-pop - there is no end to his creative melting pot and that's why he's one of the most interesting new artists in the UK.
'Work It Out' is a delicious blend of stop-start Game Boy electronics Crystal Castles would be proud of, jangly guitars and a chorus as catchy as anything the Sugababes would release, all before some weirdy Vocoder-laden vocals kick in. It's a bit space-pop and trippy in parts, but it's exactly the kind of thing the charts should be crammed with.
The new Mike Skinner? Definitely.
