Re-released just in the nick of time before debut album 'Braveface' lands next week, 'Headlock' is Esser's finest recorded moment yet. As with his previous singles, it's another slab of wonky-pop that merges the electro-indie of Hot Chip, with the b-boy musings of Beck's 'Odelay'.
Esser is far from being your usual singer-songwriter, that much is clear within the first 30 seconds. Cheap keyboards and bubbling sound effects wrap themselves around an elastic-band bassline and the sound of 50 drum kits clashing at once. He gets full-marks for mangling different influences together, and as for the catchy side of things? This one won't be leaving your noggin anytime soon.
