It's always difficult for a vocalist to dip into a bit of a solo venture, especially when you're the front man of a hugely popular and influential band like Depeche Mode. Dave Gahan on the other hand has already had a stab at a solo record (the relatively successful, but often slated 2003 long-player Paper Monsters) and his second solo full-length album Hourglass, is just around the corner; October 22nd.
Lead single Kingdom is a brooding, gloomy stab of dark electro-rock; the kind of thing more recent bands like DRAGONS try and emulate, but fail hopelessly. Kingdom isn't full-on, but is far from laid-back - Gahan's droning, vocal drawls eerily over cold synthesizers, as chiselled industrial sounds linger over a dominant, pounding drum machine.
An album's first single is usually one of the best, if not the greatest track on the record, as an attempt to gain the artist a large following. If this is the case then Hourglass looks set to delight both new fans, as well as Depeche Mode and Dave Gahan followers alike.
