Daniel Merriweather - Love & War

Dabbling mainly in the very-now resurgence of 60s soul, 'Love & War' - the new album by Daniel Merriweather - is already off to a great start, but when coupled with production from man of the moment Mark Ronson, this 26-year-old is practically guaranteed a hit record.

But this isn't the first partnership with the super producer; he loaned his vocals to Ronson's cover of the Smiths classic 'Stop Me' and last year briefly appeared on Wiley's Cash In My Pocket (also a Mark production). 'Love & War' is his first real attempt at solo stardom and diversity is the key.

From Motown, to pop, coffee-table jazz, funk and soul, Merriweather isn't restricted to any singular style or era. Just take the first piano notes, subtle string flourishes and soaring vocals on gripping opener 'For Your Money' - a complete contrast to next track 'Change' - a swift jump into hip-hop realms. Littered with beats and twinkling ivories fit for a Jay-Z track, the Australian vocal gymnast is joined by guest rapper Wale.

'Chainsaw' is the kind of chilled, laid-back song that sounds ideal in the humid summer months, toying with Hammond organ and bongo backing. 'Red' is the new single and powerful ballad, a showcase for the epic vocals that until now, have shaped hits for other artists. 'Getting Out' is soulful-funk, incorporating yet more of Ronson's vintage hip-hop beats and on 'Water & A Flame', Merriweather duets with the award-winning Adele.

A stellar body of work, 'Love & War' is a solid collection of 12 tracks and given the timeless nature of the song styles involved, will never really fade with age. A record you're likely to revisit again - even a decade from now.
