Bloc Party must have been terrified recording their second album A Weekend In The City. But as soon as the opening monk-like chants and the very sonic chords that made us fall in love with Silent Alarm kick-in on comeback single The Prayer, there's no question that the band had nothing to fear.
So the boys are finally back, sounding as strong as ever and they've brought with them a new slant on things. Programmed drum machines add a thumping, brutal rhythm and synths rush through the backdrop before thrusting Okereke's vocals into the limelight during the powerful chorus. Kele himself has hinted the band were inspired by r&b during the making of The Prayer and in a way it shows - this is where guitars and hip hop collide with simple great results.
Bloc Party have moved on enough to ensure there's no criticism for playing on a formula they know works, without alienating their current fanbase in the process. A Weekend In The City is looking even more exciting by the day.
