Bjork - Innocence

Way before the release of Bjork's Volta album was released, there was much talk (and lots of excitement too) of her collaborations with hip hop producer Timbaland. But it also came out that the experimental Icelandic pixie hadn't just lent her alien-like vocals to one of the super producer's backing tracks (funnily enough, the thought of Bjork singing Give It To Me or SexyBack doesn't seem so appealing), she had taken his beats back to her home studio and mashed them, then reworked then, then mangled them once again until she had created something completely new.

The results are new single Innocence - the kind of futuristic r&b Timbaland should have been making on his Shock Values album. The beat is the most notable thing on the track and carries most of the song, easily overshadowing Bjork's vocals that struggle to battle with screechy synths like nails being dragged down a blackboard. If truth be told, her voice, which at times are muffled against the dominating beats, don't suit such a rugged background - perhaps she should have enlisted the help of a guest vocalist to realise the full potential of the track.

The single is however, a reminder of how fun and exciting Bjork's music continues to be, whilst always retaining a strong experimental aesthetic. There is something for everyone here; beats for the hip hop heads, electronic flourishes for IDM fans and in a way, pop fans should also be able to embrace the track.
