Sugababes are no strangers to sampling well-known songs for one of their hits (remember 'Freak Like Me' was based upon 'Are Friends Electric?' by Tubeway Army) and their comeback single 'Girls' should sound familiar to anyone who has watched TV in the last 12 months - the track samples a section of Ernie K-Doe's 'Here Comes the Girls' (...that's the one from the Boots adverts).
Much like the original, the new version is catchy retro-pop, with uptempo funky trumpets that fits in with a current climate of Mark Ronson produced hits. In other words, the Sugababes are playing it safe and the strong feminist lyrics do the song no favours either - try not rolling your eyes at lines like "One look will make a grown man cry" and "Don’t let no boy tell you nothing".
While it does make for good daytime radio listening, the Sugababes have lost some of the strut and sassiness of their earlier hits - so much so, that they have become a bit predictable. It's no wonder they lost the battle to Girls Aloud for the UK's best girl band title and with the potential of The Saturdays coming through, the three-piece could well be forgetten in the not-so-distant future.
