Asylum Records may not have timed the release of Wiley's new single so well given the current state of the UK weather (and season), but this doesn't stop 'Summertime' being another potential chart smash.
The follow-up to his number 2 hit Wearing My Rolex sees the grime pioneer moving further and further away from his underground roots. If you're already familiar with Wiley's back catalogue, then 'Summertime' should come as a shock to the system - gone are the icey synths, heavy bass and post-garage beats, and instead we get three minutes of Daft Punk-sampling, dance influenced hip-pop.
It's all good fun in a retro kind of way, or a drunken night out at the local, but 'Summertime' has none of the raw energy or urgency of his grime material. Still, it won't stop Wiley in his aim for becoming king of the charts.
