'One Of The Boys' is an album I expected to hate, given the overly obvious controversial titles such as I Kissed A Girl and 'Ur So Gay'. However, Katy Perry has made an above average lively pop-rock record, which is actually let down by its most famous track.
'Thinking Of You' and 'Lost' show Perry's softer side, while the title track may take you back to female Brit Pop bands. There is a mixture of sweet songs and tracks fuelled with a girl power "I don't care" attitude - so basically if you're a guy, then this album probably won't appeal to you.
'Mannequin' lets 'One Of The Boys' down; it's simply whiney and has no saving graces and as for 'Ur So Gay'... it shouldn't have even made it onto the album. "Ur so gay and you don't even like boys"... Very good.
Similar in style to Kelly Clarkson and at times even Pink, Perry can sing well enough - but her American accent can come through a little too strong occasionally, so you might be best trying to ignore it.
'One Of The Boys' won't appeal to everyone, but it's better than expected. The main down point is that by the end of the album, you feel a little bored and every song begins to sound like the last.
