By sticking to the same style as their previous hits, OneRepublic are sure to do well with their fourth single 'Mercy'.
After the huge success of 'Apologize' - especially with a little help from their friend Timbaland, it's almost been downhill from the start for OneRepublic. Starting out with an amazing hit can send your reputation soaring, but also leaves expectations very high.
Although their debut single is by no far means their best, it has set a very high standard for all of their following singles to compete with. My worry is that despite 'Mercy' being equally as good if not better, the band will always be playing catch up with the past.
'Mercy' continues OneRepublic's safe style of pop-rock. It's an easy to listen to soft ballad, with a pleasing melody and a chorus where the guitars kick in... It's all a little over familiar - too sweet, too pleasant and safe. This is no doubt the best way for OneRepublic to go however, as their music is bound to appeal to millions and offend no one.
It's not that 'Mercy' is bland, I could easily listen to this type of music in the background for hours without it getting annoying. You just have to decide whether you'd actually choose to bother getting up and putting the CD on to listen to it. Think teen-drama soundtrack stuff and you'll know what I mean.
