Listeners of 'Volume One' will be more accustomed to seeing successful actress 'She' AKA. Zooey Deschanel onscreen rather than stage. However, with dusky, vintage chanteuse tones like this, her transition from acting to singing makes perfect sense.
'Volume One' by She & Him is a bold offering of innocent love songs, smoky vocals and gentle, piano guided tracks which see Deschanel's vocals possessing the same timeless qualities as those of Joan Wasser (or, Joan as Police Woman) and sixties songstress Dusty Springfield.
Male half of the duo, Mr. M. Ward's slinking violins and melancholic piano skills make a perfect bedfellow for Deschanel's self-written tracks.
Country influences and sixties vibes feature heavily throughout, with violins and slide guitars invading cover of The Beatles' 'I Should Have Known Better' and Americana-drenched 'Sweet Darlin''.
Despite some quirky covers, including a lamplit late night adaptation of 'Swing Low Sweet Chariot', standout tracks 'I thought I saw Your Face Today' with its sighing, willowy sentiment and the soaring 'Got me', show the duo's original song writing skills to be the most winning formula here.
'Volume One' is a seductive but formidably talented collection of tracks which somehow effortlessly allures all tastes and ages.
