This is weird - have McFly been taking notes from Radiohead? Afterall, they are doing the remotely punk thing of going DIY for their next album release, 'Radio:ACTIVE'. After parting ways with their former label, they've now established their own imprint Super Records and signed on the dotted line with the Mail On Sunday to give away their fourth album for free.
Starting afresh and having the room to literally do what they want with the new record, has revitalised the band it would seem listening to new single 'One For The Radio'. Just like Charlie ditching Busted to form Fightstar before them, this is McFly trying to reinvent themselves as a more "mature band", which gives way for joking lyrics about not being taken seriously; "So here's another song for the radio", or the pressures of being of a chart-topping band; "There's great expectations that weigh on our heads".
There's a strong American influence on 'One For The Radio', like a watered-down Biffy Clyro or UK tribute to Greenday, which suggests McFly still have some way to go before defining their own sound. But for now, at least they're jumping out of their shells and progressing somewhat from straight-out pop, to more listenable pop-punk.
