When it comes to albums more suited to the dance floor than the dining room, the key is to take them in short bursts rather than one large gulp. Listening to The Presets first full-length offering, 'Apocalypso', all at once is like spending the whole day in an art gallery-there's just too much to appreciate all in one go.
'Yippiyo-ay', the strongest offering here, taps into the formula of a foolproof dance track, almost teenage in its cute catchiness and quirky Mighty Boosh style lyrics, "Ooh, crap/you’re quite the creature/girl from the creature feature/tasty, like to eatcha...", its fluctuating Eighties beats and 'Flash Gordon'-type rushing bursts of electronica running alongside a ridiculously catchy, but not overly repetitive, chorus.
Other stand out tracks include the shamelessly surreal and spacey 'Aeons', 'Kicking and Screaming' with its robotic scuffling and deep electronic croaks, and fan favourite, 'This Boy’s In Love', which hits the romantic high notes in a searing, moody minor key.
Front man Kimberley Moyes' suited, hair gelled, grown up vocal manages to amalgamate the tones of every notable Eighties vocalist, inviting inevitable Numan / Duran / Spandau / Human League comparisons.
If you're hunting down full-on, brain cross-wiring, involuntarily dance-inducing, Eighties nodding electro-indie pushed that one step further into the future, 'Apocalypso' may well be your album of the year.
