Wiley - Wearing My Rolex
[Atlantic Records]

The boy done good. Grime pioneer, producer, remixer and mixtape connoisseur, Wiley the grimefather himself has been promising to infiltrate the mainstream for a while, but no one could imagine he'd be involved with such a massive chart-angled track (Editor: since this review was written, the song has reached number 5 in the UK singles chart on downloads alone).

A bootleg mash-up in essence, the tune grapples with 'Yeah Yeah' by Bodyrox (featuring Luciana) and vocal chunks from DSK's 'What Would We Do', with Wiley rapping over the top. It's not grime, instead we get an electro-house-club mix that is seriously heavy on the synths and grinding bass, battling with ricochet beats and easy-on-the-ear melody. It's as far as grime, garage or any other trace of urban music will get to daytime radio, for now.

But Wiley hasn't sold-out - it's important to note that. In fact a new forthcoming album, 'Grime Wave', should prove where the Eskiboy's head is still firmly fixed; on the same streets that delivered the 'Tunnel Vision' series. Let's just hope after a hit single like this, Wiley will reach the same levels of sales as Dizzee and Kano; he sure deserves it after all these years.
