If you've got a thing for cartridges, nostalgia and Princess Daisy then here's something to get you harder than 'Ecco II: The Tides Of Time'. Nonfinite, a Wisconsin whizzkid who spends his spare time hotrodding Gameboys (Gordon Bennett) is giving away his debut mini-album for free, hosted by Blighty's very own CalmDownKidder imprint.

Don't let the absence of a price-tag or MySpace campaign draw comparisons with the more bankable acts cashing in on the blip-hop niche, though: Nonfinite is a true microchip conjurer, adeptly producing PCB artwork that fizzes with etching tank solvents. 'The Apathy Shuffle' is 'Terminator 2' retold for a platform port -- all evil policemen drowning in nitrogen -- while 'Light Through Bedroom Blinds' runs a montage of happy faxes, staves printing off in machine code.

Nonfinite has a keen sense of nonfashion too, and doesn't try to offset his circuits with live instruments or catwalk eye-candy (to this bloke, a dichotomy is something involving your throat, a straw and a scalpel). The bass pads of 'Yellowfield' purr like weekend Flymos, the blades sparking against flashing crystalline gravel, and end-of-level-boss 'Retarded Pool Party' is every bit as splashy and tongue-in-cheek as its South Park-esque title implies.

At twenty six minutes, Nonfinite's debut never gets a whiff of a chance to start spoiling, and therefore bypasses the obvious pitfall associated with these kind of genre projects. In fact, the only real worry to be found amongst the jiving protons and protozoa funfest of 'Northbridge' is that the likes of Crystal Castles might try and pillage it, luring its author round on a remix errand like a housewife who's missing the gasman. Mr Finite deserves a better legacy than that - this is a man who knows that power in its purest form is a word written in white under a red LED.
