If you Watched American Idol and like me were cheering on David Cook, then you may well be looking forward to his debut single as a superstar - 'The Time Of My Life'.
Released as a download straight after the live final, 'The Time Of My Life' is not in fact Cook's first ever release. Prior to entering the competition, David released albums both as part of two bands (Axium and Midwest Kings) and also as a solo artist, though I expect having millions of people suddenly know his name will bring all the success he's been waiting for.
The song itself is nice enough, but because it was pre-selected before the winner was chosen, it doesn't really go with Cook's voice or style. Sung to different backing music it might have been a lot better, but the cheesy backing vocals singing their "ahhh's" and "lalala's", along with some twinkling piano bits makes the song a little too poppy for the edgy-sounding singer.
David Cook's voice has always reminded me of Jason Wade from Lifehouse, it's gruff and gritty and I hope to hear him use it with more rocky tracks in the future. He was winner due to his raw sound and love of guitar based music, so although he makes the best of a song that picked him rather than the other way round, this single is too mainstream for David and I expect he'll be in the studio with his guitar ASAP, making the kind of music he's passionate about.
