'Swords Of Truth' - one of the best, if not the best song from 'Beat Pyramid' - an album that promised so much, yet delivered so very little. Plucked here as the next single from the cryptic indie darlings These New Puritans, the song is everything they should have stretched out further for their first long-player.
The thrashing drums are dubstep inspired apparently, but sound more like a Missy / Timbaland beat to these ears and is ultimately what makes the band stand out from the other purveyors of post-punk. Teamed up with blaring horns and a timid, manic vocal of chief songwriter Jack Barnett, it displays the potential the Southend-on-Sea youngsters have if they could only channel their more inventive thoughts into something more tangible.
Where the album strayed in parts, fitting loose ideas together with cut-and-paste chunks of their idols, 'Swords Of Truth' is the modern take on post-punk the band should consider investigating further if they want to be anything other than a 5-minute wonder. If they keep on with tracks like these, the band will be a name to be mentioned in many years to come.
