A collaborative project between university chums Greg Holley and Oli Lisher, Acumen's brand of stylish, organic electronica will likely appeal to even the most stubborn IDM fan.
A good pair of headphones is essential to the listening process here too, as the duo's blend of everyday found sounds, surprisingly melodic instrumentation and finely textured, crystal clear beats can be a joy to behold.
Despite an occasional tendency to meander into bland muzak territories (witness the horrible sax solo on 'Blind X') tracks such as 'Omega', 'Kinetic', 'Vermiculite' and 'Recycle-Refuse' are particularly inventive. The latter especially delights with a grand orchestral sweep, reminiscent of The Cinematic Orchestra.
As a whole, 'Acumen' is one of those records that offers something new with each spin.
