If it ain't broke, then don't fix it. A sentiment Isobel Campbell has obviously taken to heart for her next album with overseas cohort Mark Lanegan. Together, the pair's 2006 debut 'Ballad Of The Broken Seas', an album that utilised folk, alt-country, blues, orchestration and flawlessly mixed the rough with the smooth, scored a Mercury Nomination, so there is no surprise a similar route is taken the second time around.
'Who Built The Road' is again a song built on contradiction; Campbell's swooning, almost-comatose coo is barely audible behind Lanegan's dominating, whiskey-soaked gruff vocal and while Isobel's output is one of intimacy and subtlety, Mark bears his soul openly for all to see - it's a combination that shouldn't work - but sales figures of their debut proves otherwise.
'Who Built The Road' is lyrically sharp, harmonious and musically rich (shuffle drums, acoustic guitars, violin and cello, church bells are all included), but did you expect anything less?
