From the first bounce of electronic tom drums and sparse guitars, 'Never Never Love' is a distinctive fusion of genres from the offset. Much like the debut album of this London musician / film-maker Pop Levi, glam-rock and odd electronics are the primary choice of weapon, but things are more interesting, more experimental than 'The Return to Form Black Magick Party'.
Although stripped to the core and relying on no more than an inescapable beat-backing, a voice fed through an assortment of effects and manipulation, then sound effects like a small child trying his new "my first keyboard" at Christmas, the single is still energetic, funky and impossible to resist.
Levi is either brave or stupid to release a song with such a bare structure as a lead single from his next album, perhaps preventing it from mass approval. But for now, it remains one of the best pop songs of 2008.
