It wasn't too along ago that Belong, AKA Turk Dietrich and Michael Jones, were making some of the most stunning drone and abstract ambient work imaginable, in the surpise slow-creeping classic that was displayed on 2006's beautiful 'October Language' album (read our review).
Colorless Record is a "covers album" according to the duo, but you wouldn't know it; so radically reworked are the songs, that they take on a completely new life and direction of their own. Drone and ambient are the key words again here, beat-free and surprisingly noise-less, this is the comedown record after the sonic white noise of October's devastating results.
The four instrumentals drift and sway, only acknowledging a glimpse of the originals by incorporating mere snippets and vocals, severely muffled and swallowed with echo. At times the guitars and feedback recall My Bloody Valentine's 'Loveless', especially on 'Girl From New York', although don't expect a simple clone of Kevin Shields and Co.
Unlike a vast majority of drone-based music, the tracks are fairly held back in length - with the exception of the final 6 minute plus 'My Clown', they round-off at a reasonable three and half minute average, meaning they never stray into boring, overlong or indulgent areas. A pleasing stop-gap before October Language's official successor appears - recommended.
