In a five year period, Denmark's Efterklang have transformed from the subdued broody electronica of their Springer EP and subsequent Tripper album, to a full-scale post-rock band of epic proportion, toying with grand orchestral arrangements, lush harmonies and a multitude of instrumentation.
On Caravan, the latest single from 2007's 'Parades' (review), skuttering percussive beats, violins and horns add an overwhelming backdrop to the multiple vocal layers - supplied by both male and female singers; the latter reminiscent of the twisting spoken-harmonies of Rings. They make the kind of majestic outsider-rock that Mercury Rev should be offering, if they weren't so Walt Disney.
Flipside, The Romance On Mammoth Hill, is not quite what you'd expect after hearing the grandness of the title track. Here the Danish collective are more experimental; merging plucked banjo strings, a minimalist atmosphere and Gregorian chant-like vocals. If only the masses would dig a little further than the likes of Arcade Fire, Mecury Rev, Flaming Lips etc, they'd soon discover Efterklang are one of the most criminally overlooked bands we have to offer right now.
