Modern Love you are truly spoiling us! Two weeks after Claro Intelecto's devastating second album Metanarrative landed and what's this? Only a new EP by Mark Stewart's cohort Andy Stott and this two-track vinyl delight is possibly his greatest moment dedicated to plastic.
The A-side, in this case Fine Metallic Dollar, is the more minimal of the pair - a slow-builder that hits all the right places. A marriage of deep-ocean bass, submarine bleeps and the patter of crisp 4/4 pads start proceedings, for a pairing that will have your speaker cones rattling in no time. Next comes the mutated and mangled mechanical synth and a classic mix of hi-hats and rimshots; it's both spacious and atmospheric, as Stott rips the most out of such basic sounds.
Bad Landing is the b-side, but also acts as the lead track for obvious reasons. Who'd have thought it, a marriage of sparse dub and reduced house sounding so immense. Skipping over styles, signature beats are overlaid with immediate bass riding so low it should be six feet under. Rimshots are teased through reverb and the futuristic dub is furthered more-so by the reggae-ish organs. It's part Pole, part dancefloor, but undeniably Andy Stott - one of the UK's finest producers.
