Welding together the cheeky narrative of contemporaries Flipron and the stammering folk strut of King Creosote, makes Friends of the Bride accessible enough, through this friendly if a little trite A-side, ‘You Can’t Take Him Anywhere’. A simple chorus and a winging melody could be their saving grace, aiding a flight into the lower reaches of the charts.
Snippets of Billy Bragg’s song and style book are drawn from heavily for B-side ‘Hey Buddy’, before a snappy chorus is utilised to the point of being worn out. With a little experimenting and formula departing, Friends of the Bride do seem to have the base to possibly do a The Hoosiers on us. Whether that is a good, bad or indifferent thing is for you to decide?
