Chromeo - Needy Girl
[Back Yard Recordings]

Either Chromeo are stuck in some weird time-warp or they need to invest in some new records and fast. Needy Girl is (again) well and truly lost in the 1980's. As with all these type of bands, you have a feeling they have a checklist of token things to include in their music; ironic keytar - check, Vocodered robot vocals - check, drum machines fed with reverb - yep, and finally that horrible, truly awful slap bass everyone seems to be using at the minute - Justice I'm looking at you.

Bloc Party on the other hand know how to turn the song around on their tongue-in-cheek titled High School Prom Remix. A dark, pulsing beat takes it to a moodier, more menacing place with few synths and the best thing? Yes the terrible bass is ripped out, thrown aside, stamped on and then replaced by a much deeper line reminiscent of the Knight Rider theme. But most importantly, it avoids any of the cheese of the original recording.

Now if someone can fuse the two, we're on to a real winner, but the single is still worth it for the Bloc Party mix alone.
