The Ting Tings - Great DJ
[Columbia]

The Ting Tings are really going to start getting on a few nerves soon. From a handful of limited vinyl singles last year, this Salford-based duo have been catapulted into the limelight in the past month. From their NME Awards tour slot, to their music soundtracking E4 adverts and daytime MTV video plays, to the remix by Calvin Harris on the b-side of this single Great DJ. It just shows what signing to a major can do for an unknown, fledgling band.

Let's cut to the chase, on the merits of this song alone it is clear the band can't play to save their lives. We hear a basic two-chord jangly riff like a kid who has just got his first Argos guitar for Christmas, fisher price keyboards and the melody would be non-existant if the wonky vocals weren't so prominant.

But surprisingly, there is something hard to explain that makes the track instantly addictive - but as mentioned earlier, it will bug the hell out of you from the third-fourth listen onwards. They fall into the same "uber-cool" indie-dance realms of CSS, Holy Hail and the like, or even New Young Pony Club, without the over-the-top efforts to be so hip. This could well be a band that enjoys more than just one successful single this year (until the next popular trend comes along that is).
