Tokyo Moon is the song that started it all (well, release-wise anyway) for Bedford-based songsmith Matthew Thomas Dillon, or Windmill as he is known here. Available in a much rawer, stripped-back version in 2006 by Static Caravan as the b-side to the equally epic Racing, the song has since been given a much fuller, stronger recording courtesy of producer Tom Knotts (from The Earlies) for inclusion on last year's stunning, but somewhat bizarrely overlooked album Puddle City Racing Lights.
It's impossible to read a review of Windmill without at least one reference of the Flaming Lips / Mercury Rev etc, but as he told us in an interview last year, these songs were written long before Dillon's ears had ever caught wind of these acts. If truth be told, these are still fair comparisons due to the overwhelming similarities and style; Dillon has the same fragile, haunting qualities and basically if you enjoy any of these bands, you will more than love Puddle City Racing Lights.
Tokyo Moon is one of those rare songs that instantly gets the blood rushing and the hair on your neck standing. From a simple piano-riff intro and those strange, heartbreak vocals comes a swooshing rush of absolutely huge drums and orchestral prowess that would give Arcade Fire and British Sea Power a run for their money in the epic stakes. It is just a mystery why this talented songwriter is not more well-known.
