Blood Red Shoes - You Bring Me Down
[Mercury]

"Bury your head, bare your heart, I can’t...I can’t...I can't" shouts Blood Red Shoes vocalist Laura-Mary Carter like the most tormented of souls. You Bring Me Down you may recognise already; it has become a pinnacle of their majestic live shows and was released once before, as a single at the end of 2006 (review).

The original version paid homage to the duo's love of a DIY punk aesthetic; hastily recorded, less-than-professional drumming, but a riff so lethal that it could wipe-out an entire army. Bulked up yet further for the album, version number two packs more than a vicious punch. Laura-Mary's guitars are refrained during the verses, throwing you off the scent before the herculean-sized, head-blown riffs of the chorus crash-in, replicating the sheer intensity of their live shows.

Unlike their peers, You Bring Me Down finds BRS happy doing their own thing; you won't find Ansell and Carter doing disco beats and bendy basslines here, just a love of grunge, indie and rock. In short, this is music that will not age quickly, or have you bored quicker than the next pigeonhole to follow 'New-Rave' is conjured up in the IPC offices.
