Mere days after declaring fellow Brits Spokes as ‘one’s to watch’ (on their EP People Like People Like You), Reading/Bristol-based troupe A Genuine Freakshow unleash this beast of a single upon us. The song in question is the rollercoaster ride that is We Are the Undercurrents; two minutes of kaleidoscopic epic-rock freak-out bliss.
Despite its short running time, this collective compress everything they have to offer into this composition, delivering a knockout punch with an insanely catchy melodic hook. A powerful, high-pitched falsetto reminds of Mew’s Jonas Bjerne while touching the elevated, emotive heights of Her Name Is Calla.
Said vocals nestle on top of a celebratory mariachi-style brass arrangement and a bass/guitar/drum template. Like Sigur Ros on a quirky pop binge, A Genuine Freakshow’s colliding style has you on the edge of your seat and is simply astounding. The sort of band I would, if I had cash to burn, give millions to and tell them to go and make themselves famous.
