Think of the predicament Kanye West is in when choosing a new single from his 50 Cent-defeating Graduation album. Just how do you follow a song so universally embraced as the Daft Punk-sampling, dance floor-loving Stronger? Anyone in their right mind would think it would be difficult to live up to those expectations and well, next single Homecoming, unfortunately proves this is the case.
You see, for this less-than-overwhelming song, West has roped-in Coldplay's Chris Martin (after his Jay-Z collaboration, is he the rapper's new choice of hip hop meets indie crossover?) for what can only be described as a really poor effort for all parties involved. Mr Paltrow himself offers a mediocre vocal and dire piano riff that gives Homecoming a watered-down, blander than bland reggae feel that really does not work. West's vocals don't suit the backing music involved and Martin's involvement seems quite pointless, but utterly obvious in terms of shifting a few copies of the single.
A strange choice of single and a crap collaboration that should never have seen the light-of-day. It's a shame to think because of the high-profile glitzy Hollywood names involved, that this poor excuse of a track should ever have been laid-to-tape in the studio.
