The Kills - U.R.A Fever
[Domino]

It's nearly six years since The Kills released their debut EP Black Rooster, which brought with it a lot of promise and expectations. These were more than delivered on the band's first album, Keep On Your Mean Side, but what followed was a disappointing sequel - No Wow, and it felt as though the duo's stripped raw, vicious blues-rock had sadly lost its edge.

Fast forward to 2008, where VV and Hotel are on the verge of their difficult third album Midnight Boom and with it comes first single, U.R.A Fever. It's incredible the way the band have changed; there is no hint of the guitars that have dominated albums 1 and 2, instead we hear a downbeat hybrid of trip-hop and lazy telephone rings in the background, as both members take it turns to sing a slurry, sassy spoken-word vocal.

Midnight Boom could well be the album fans aren't expecting, but let's just hope The Kills have gone truly experimental on their new baby.
