Bjork - Declare Independence
[One Little Indian]

Declare Independence is the one track on Bjork's Volta album that keeps on achieving contrasting feedback. On one side of the fence we hear the fans who think it's the best song on her current long-player, while others see it as cheap and quasi-political. I have to admit I fall with the latter.

Bjork fails to pull off the impact as she yelps like a demented pixie, shouting lines such as "Start your own currency / Make your own stamp / Protect your language / Declare Independence" over spastic beats and grinding synths. It's as though Alec Empire has had a sex change, only it has as much bite and passion as a Sugababes single.

It's funny to think how acclaimed the album was upon its release in the Summer, yet it failed to appear in any end of year album charts. A disappoint to say the least, especially considering how many brilliant songs that have emerged from Bjork's twisted mind and the previous singles Volta has produced.
