As guitarist with Trespassers William and a sought after studio technician, Matt Brown’s Disinterested project is always going to be an ethereal affair. The sounds constructed throughout “Behind Us”, his second solo outing, are the aural equivalent of being wrapped in a puffy, warm blanket during and ice-cold winter’s night.

Much of “Behind Us” features Brown’s experiments with guitar and effects pedals, testing its limits and in turn creating a graceful suite of songs notable for the shimmering clouds of ambient guitar haze.

The vast sounds of “I Wish It Was the 90’s” are richly melodic, highlighted by alluring looped and reversed guitar parts, with soft guitar chimes layered on top. The euphoric "Grey

“What You Wanted”, meanwhile, soars like the recent Harold Budd and Robin Guthrie collaboration, with Brown colouring his canvas with deftly placed brushes of guitar, that soon melt into dreamland.

However, where as some albums in a similar mould lose out due to lack of variety, Disinterested incorporates vocals sporadically, using guest musicians such as Trespassers cohort Anna-Lynne Williams and classical singer Dino Palazzi. Revered jazz guitarist also lends his six-sting skills to “Behind Us” too. Such factors allow “Behind Us” to remain a captivating listen.

“Felt Leaves’”, featuring Williams on vocals, grand opening strains soon give way to echoic percussion clicks and syrupy Cocteau Twins style vocals. Creating a sound that would not be out of place on an Air release, Williams’ seductive vocals are multi-tracked around exquisitely phased guitar effects.

With swirling, cascading guitar formed into massive, spatial soundscapes, Disinterested prefers to move his compositions at incremental pace. It is music like this, irresistible oceans of sound, that can transport, even the most hardened cynic, above the clouds. The soundtrack to euphoria and exhilaration, if the human race ever did learn to fly, perhaps “Behind Us” should be the score.
