If you've only heard Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro through singles before (which would be understandable, seeing as their last three efforts have all scooped UK Top 20 single chart entries), then prepare to hear a totally different angle of the group who have often cited as Britain's Greatest Rock Band.
Machines is a re-recording of the closing piece on the band's Puzzle album and thank God too, as the original (strictly acoustic) version was a bit wet, lacking of any power and falling down the whole token ballad route.
Thanks to new production by Garth Richardson (Rage Against The Machine) and mixing by Andy Wallace (Nirvana), things have got a bit more interesting with the song - we now find an accompaniment of pianos, drums and slow-churning cellos that compliment vocalist Simon Neil's endearing and emotional lyrics, especially on lines like "Cos I've started falling apart I'm not savouring life. I've forgotten how good it can be to feel alive.".
Things do tend to feel gloomy when hearing Machines, but peak just beneath the surface and all is not lost, as you can't help but smile to lines like: "No matter what you go through there's always hope. You can make yourself happy". Biffy Clyro are still however, at their peak when they are at their loudest.
