Motionless - Motionless
[Ericrock]

With differing independent movements cropping up in just about every major city throughout the world, the scene Boston-based label Ericrock has helped to mould is nothing short of incredible. Few labels base importance on D.I.Y. ethics as much as Ericrock. The words cash and profit do not enter their vocabulary; refreshingly it really is all about the music.

Ericrock offer services encompassing everything from grassroots level (fuel, food and accommodation for touring acts) through to excellent post-production services through incessant (and passionate) promotion. At shows, there is no fixed price for admission, fans pay what they can. Within Ericrock’s philosophy, if that amounts to very little money then so be it.

Motionless are an instrumental quartet from Massachutsas and the latest band to receive the five-star Ericrock treatment. Bringing about and invigorating sense of urgency to a clogged post-rock scene, Motionless opt for the unusual route of incorporating Rhodes piano into their compositions. Their whirlwind sound sways furiously between post-rock and post-hardcore structures, coming across like Fugazi jostling for position with Explosions In The Sky. The Rhodes, however, gives each track a timeless feel that recalls The Album Leaf’s lush soundscapes.

“Nature Unveiling Herself to Science” is the best example of the Motionless’ recurrent awesome force. Held together between precise, complex percussion, Motionless direct this track through a dramatic guitar, bass and drums workout before launching into a jagged post-hardcore rhythm featuring a smattering of discordant electronics.

“Winter Heat’s” warm Album Leaf tones prompts the EP away from the fast-faster concepts of previous tracks, instead providing a soft, sun-kissed vibe that contrasts the ferocious intensity of other compositions here.

The gentle and cascading “Bury the New Sea” soon follows, drawing this four track Ep to a close merging starlit Rhodes with acoustic guitar, tentative percussion and waves of frothy water sounds. It displays a band that is equally at home letting their poignant tendencies show, as they are cultivating impressive instrumental drills.

Motionless deserve credit for attempting to distance themselves from the archetypal post-rock paths. There is certain vigor to their sound, which is a remarkable achievement given the bland routes most other bands prefer to follow. In line with Ericrock’s D.I.Y policies, this EP comes with tremendously original artwork and is available to purchase (for a nominal fee) or to download legally absolutely free. It is your choice; what are you waiting for?
